KALESMA SPA

KALESMA SPA

Kalesma Mykonos is a project whose ceaseless tendencies for growth and evolution are in the very core of it’s identity.
In summer 2024, after months in the making, the arrival of the all-new spa is a reality.
Aiming to create a space that will blend seemingly with the pre-existing common spaces of the hotel, the composition of the KALESMA SPA originated from the interior study vocabulary inspired by studio Bonarchi that gave birth to this iconic resort.
The Spa embraces the hotel’s remarkable color palette, featuring strong contrasts. Dark combed stone veneers, that resemble the suites’ bamboo headboards, are paired with white surfaces, creating an ideal backdrop to showcase the organic forms and dynamic geometries of the space. Natural authentic materials like oak and granite coexist with traditional techniques of the island, such as white plaster coating the walls, giving them a patina-like finish.
A prominent feature in the spa is the element of water, with the striking Apparatus pendant light reflecting on its nearly glass-like surface.
Delicate treatments from local artisans here and there add a unique artistic value to the project.
The Kalesma Mykonos Spa . A place where light, mingled with it’s derivative shadow can create environments, atmospheres and sensations.

ANANDES

Hotel

ANANDES

Gracing the highest point of Mykonos’ entrancing chora, overlooking it’s glaring white houses and the breathtaking view of the Aegean sea, Anandes hotel arrived with high hopes for defining the new Cycladic chic style.
Combining confident taste and creativity, Studio Bonarchi observes the island’s rich traditional elements through a contemporary, ablative lens, blending them harmoniously with avant garde pieces of contemporary design.
Organic forms dressed in luminous white contrasted with authentic natural materials in dark shades compose spaces with a strong visual impact.
Custom furniture drawning inspiration from iconic Greek fixtures of the past, partnered with exquisite sculptural lighting items generate a feeling of uniqueness for the visitor of Anandes.
Outstanding furniture and art pieces coming from the international scene have been selected, thus bringing to A n a n d e s a certain air of eclecticism.
Upon entering the hotel, guests are welcomed by custom light fixtures from French sculptor and artist, Philippe Antonioz, with the lobby slowly unfolding into the terrace to reveal the vast ocean view that truly sets Anandes apart. The hotel features custom artworks from artists including Richard Serra and Thomas Houseago, each complementing its sophisticated Cycladic aesthetic.
In the lobby fireplace, the two organic shaped Pierre Augustin Rose sofas co-exist with the handmade coffee table Demeter created by the famous French duo Gilles et Boissier while the Beaune lamp by Thierry Lemaire complements the synthesis. Lighting pieces hold a protagonist role to the interiors look and feel. When entering the lobby, pendant light “ Fingi ” by Eric Schmidt stands as a sculpture above the custom reception desk.
Splashes of Navy blue color, either on wide surfaces or stylishly placed on discreet details here and there, reflect upon the wealth of the Cycladic island’s naval legacy.
The rooms are dominated by real stone, embossed pine, linen fabrics, and bronze details in a dark patina. This abundant approach forges a palette of contrasts in a creative dialogue with the view of the sea and the city of Mykonos.
Glimpses of mid century design, meticulously placed in the interiors, are a nod to the jet setters of the past and the allure of their cosmopolitan lifestyle which still holds a fascination to this era’s globetrotters.

LN RESIDENCE

LN RESIDENCE

Studio Bonarchi returned to Mykonos once more, this time around commissioned to design a private residence.
A rather idiosyncratic aproach was called for in order to bring this project to life, engaging in an extensive collaboration with the owners.
Overall, the designs were inextricably linked to their vision, their philosophy in life and all the things they share a passionate love for.
A cubist mood defining the architectural language of the project along with a constant attention towards the authenticity of the finest materials used were the two central axes around which the creative proccess evolved.
Domineering volumes of dark woods and rough stones cover the horizontal and vertical surfaces of the house, creating spaces with special textures evocating a distinctive character.
A fairly extensive collection of custom made pieces of furniture was exclusively designed by our studio for this unique project, spanning from sculptural bronze lighting items and stone headboards all the way to linen sunbeds and dark wood dinning tables in the outdoor pool lounge area.

Doma is the latest addition to the studio bonarchi headquarters. By engaging a typical roof flat on the terrace of an art deco athenian building we jumped at the opportunity to create a scenery comprising of bold gestures.
An immersive table dominates the space. An organic marble table “en forme libre” designed as a tribute to charlotte perriand’s iconic furniture item.
A fireplace frame made of dark granite in three different textures provides a dramatic backround. the iconic “platner” armchair , a ceramic custom made table lamp and a selection of art pieces compliment the surroundings.
An ideal ambiance for the bonarchi team members, envisioning and creating in concert.

BASE HOTEL, ASPEN COLORADO

Hotel

ASPEN

For Studio Bonarchi, The Base Hotel is a landmark in our progression since it is our very first project, a collaboration with DZA architects, that is taking place in the US.
Furthermore, it presented as with the extra challenge of designing a capsule hotel, more notably so since it wasn’t to be realized as part of our familiar Mediterranean landscapes.
Since it is located in Aspen Colorado, our goal was to create a distinctive identity for this project, bringing in the two most individualistic characteristics – Aspen’s particular allure as a skiing resort destination along with the wealth of the folklore associated with the mines, handed down to the community as an important part of Aspen’s heritage.
As per our custom, a holistic approach was our take on this collaboration. Everything spanning from the reception desk the the bedside tables in the rooms has been customly designed.
Concerning the materials, a strong concept of duality is evident throughout the public spaces as much as in the rooms. Wooden linings and volumes of stone in large proportions blend seemingly with one another in a constant dialogue. Details of black iron and brass reflect upon Aspen’s mining tradition for over one hundred years.

ODERA

Hotel

ODERA

Tinos is an island of wondrous beauty, part of the Cyclades archipelago, that is becoming one of the up-and-coming stars of the Aegean.
In that light, the arrival of ODERA – the first five star resort of such a scale on the island, should seem only natural.
The name alone – an amalgam of the worlds ᾠδή (ODE) and αέρας (wind) worthily claims the stature of this enchanting place.
Tinos has always been considered the most spiritual island of Greece, and quite rightfully so. Incredibly enough, more than 700 Orthodox and Catholic whitewashed churches can be found around it’s 60 picturesque villages.
Reflecting this element of spirituality in the conception of the hotel’s identity and interior design was a goal from the very start.
A doric design approach was called for – Materials in their purest form, confined architectural gestures and discreet pieces of furniture were thoughtfully selected as a direct reference to the islands’ dense monastic mosaic.
In the main Lobby, the contrast between light and darkness inspires a certain kind of mysticism. The dominating sequence of arches pays an homage to the renowned Ursulines monastery, considered among the best Mediterranean institutions at the time, where a long list of highly esteemed European artists and scholars arrived in order to give lessons, and by doing so, contributed in creating a sense of cosmopolitan sophistication to this part of the Aegean.
Traditional architecture emerged as a natural protagonist, as well. Tinos is unbelievably rich in that regard. Think only of the characteristic pigeon houses, standing tall on the edge of a hill with their elaborate decorations. Their trademark geomertic designs are subtly mirrored in engraved details on the stone headboards of the rooms.
In the main restaurant, custom plate racks placed among the dining area are graced with the characteristic marble ornaments so often adorning the main entrances of the island’s houses, while on the outdoor terrace, elaborate pebble floor decorations in black and white celebrate an eons long Aegean artisanal heritage.
Last but not least, a tribute to the exceptional tradition of local artisans, marble sculptors, artists and painters, was in due. When in Tinos, someone can’t help but feel that everything on this island is somehow more elaborate when compered to the other Cycladic islands. Architecture, traditional ornamentation, traditional art and so on.
. In essence, this is what we aimed to incorporate into the interiors of the Odera. Refinement. Elegance. Appreciation for art. Love for the attention to detail.

STOA ATHENS

Hotel

STOA ATHENS

Following a period were resort projects almost monopolized studio Bonarchi’s agenda, the invitation to design a 25 rooms five star hotel in the very heart of Athens was received as a most welcome change.
The location alone was more than enough to set the wheels of creativity turning.
An imposing stoa named after Pericles, a prominent figure of the Golden Age of Athens, streaching behind an exquisite Art Deco Facade of a building only a few minutes walk from the historical center of the city.
On our first visit to the site, we were mesmerized by the wealth of Art Deco undertones that have survived throughout the building’s numerous decades life span. An elaborate geometric railing here, an elegant ceiling molding there. Serving as evidence that , even in years long past, Athenians would cast a curious eye towards the European tendencies in Architecture and design.
We took extra care in preserving and enriching all those segments, all the while bringing them in an harmonious dialogue with celebrated elements of Ancient Greek architecture.
Glimpses of contemporary design and meticulously selected pieces of art were added to the mold, creating a new aesthetic vocabulary.
Shades of beige and cream, simulating the colours of the perpetual marbles of the ancient city, blend with hues of greens borrowed from the leaves of the olive trees around the Acropolis.
The stoa itself pays homage to the iconic Stoa of Attalos in the Ancient Agora of Athens. An elaborate collonade leads to the sunlit patio on the far end.
In the reception, a dark brown patina on the wall provides a dramatic back round for volumes of travertine stone sculpted in accordance with the Doric order, paired with a selection of eclectic pieces of furniture and contemporary lighting items.
On the opposite side of the stoa, inviting darker colours, curved marble frames, retro lighting pieces and velvet upholsteries bring out an art deco allure to the fireplace lounge. Luke Edward Hall’s design for Rubelli on the paravan adds a whimsical touch.
The bar is a Tinos green marble sculptural extravaganza with flashes of bronze.
In the restaurant, sconces installed upon mirror lined walls and dinning chairs with fringe details are a nod to old school glamour while a dialoque between the exquisite pendant items from Apparatus and the characteristic Athenian mosaic floor enfolds everything in sophistication.

M RESIDENCE

M RESIDENCE

Interventions are always welcome and can be truly creative as a process, exactly the way it was with the M Residence project.
An already lived-in space, appreciated and loved, where the owners felt the need to proceed with a number of changes to freshen things up.
In the dinning room, aiming for a magnetic ambience that transmits a certain flair of lusciousness, we settled for a colour palette consisting of dark hues of grey and taupe.
The room is elegantly enveloped in boiserie made of brushed oak wood. Delicate bronze frames decorate the wooden panelling while the walls above are dressed in silk upholstery.
Custom made pieces of lighting, both pendant and wall sconces, illuminate the room in the most becoming way, highlighting the exquisite materials.
Aiming for a change of scenery, a cosy fireplace loung in warm, soothing tones of beige and gray was created next door. Comfortable Meridiani armchairs and a massive round table made of mock grey marble are arranged in a balanced and harmonious way. A custom made bar from brushed oak wood and bronze attracts the attention, providing the link to the dinning room.

NB RESIDENCE. ATHENS RIVIERA

Residence

NB Residence. Athens Riviera

A journey to the Far East was the source of inspiration when designing the interiors for this private residence, a destination close to the heart of it’s owners who travels frequently with a passion for collecting objects, pictures, memories. Based on the Athens riviera the residence overlooks the most beautiful “Zen” beach, whose name seems to have dictated a particular style and the overall scheme of the project.
The house is developed on three levels. On the ground floor someone finds the living room and the open air kitchen. A monochrome palette characterizes all the selections while a Doric style governs the layout of spaces and the separation of functions into a free grid consisting of four sections. The material of the cement mortar on the floor has been similarly used on the walls as well as on the wooden constructions, thus creating the effect of a space conceived as a single box. The central kitchen island and the elongated fireplace, both lined with antique burnt stone a s s o l u t o n e r o, stand out in the composition.
On the second level there is a guest room. The gesture of an elongated low bench made of stone dynamically runs through the space while oak sliding panels separate the sleeping area. The master bedroom is developed on the top floor, along with the master bathroom and the dressing room. The principal idea of the configuration was to create a glass box that houses a douche space in common view with the bed space. In doing so, one’s gaze can travel unobstructed all the way to the beach.
Rough, authentic materials. Gestures simple yet significant. Spaces without visual barriers that allow the owners to focus on the real essentials: a life near the sea, alongside the memories of a trip from the past and with the eyes set towards the journeys yet to come.

VILLA ANGSANA, CORFU

Villa Angsana, Corfu

Part of the A n g s a n a resort, this two level villa with a spectacular view to the Ionian sea rest on the top of the hill overlooking the entire property.
As with most of our projects based on locations with a strong traditional identity, the challenge was to create an artistic vocabulary that stayed true to the Ionian architecture and interiors while at the same time incorporating some contemporary connotations.
The villa consists of three separate bedrooms with their own private bathrooms, a main living room and a kitchen area. The white wooden beam ceiling and the t r a v e r t i n o stone floor someone finds in those rooms, are two strong conceptual gestures that work as a reminiscent of the island’s traditional architecture. Surrounded by these elements , a selection of contemporary wooden furniture, custom made lighting elements and works of art create an amalgam of authenticity and sophistication.
Natural rattan linings , dark brass details and linen fabrics add warmth and serenity.

Kalesma is the fruit of a stitchless collaboration between K-Studio, Studio Bonarchi and the hotel owners, that binds modernism with the local tradition, reinventing mykonian hospitality by proposing a laid-back experience of island living.
Kalesma is not really a hotel. It is a village, in the traditional Mykonian sense.Embracing the raw beauty of the arid rocky landscape and dark blue sea, and taking inspiration from the simple honesty of the island vernacular, we have designed a ‘village’ of whitewashed bungalows and villas arranged parametrically, as if pixelating the landscape, around a central ‘plateia’ or communal space. Sitting on the spine of a hill in the north-west part of the island it is uniquely positioned to enjoy views of both the sunrise to the east, and the sunset to the west. Accommodation is compiled of 25 suites and 2 villas, each with their own private pool terrace and sea view.
Myconian tradition, local history and the “aloni“, the old existing threshing floor, were the source of inspiration for the style of the Kalesma Mykonos hotel. This unique origin arose the necessity for Vangelis Bonios, the interior designer of the project, to create an elemental dialogue between the exceptional surroundings and the interiors.
An amalgam of tradition with contemporary design elements culminated Studio Bonarchi’s interpretation of the Cycladic style. The interiors of both accommodations and main spaces are characterised by the coexistence of pure Myconian sculptural geometries together with modern linear gestures that intertwine in an organic way. Contrasts between the brightness of white , the natural feeling of brushed wood and the sharpness of dark brass details, illuminate the heritage of this exceptional property. Whitewashed walls together with natural sandblasted stone floors in earthly colours and dark wooden ceilings create an ideal natural canvas for the interiors in a way that allows the blue colour of the sea to stand out. Kalesma, that in greek means “ invitation “, is a real exploration of themes and textures.
Most of the furniture are custom made, created by greek craftsmen and individual artists so as to achieve a unique, “one of a kind” feeling. Comfortable upholstered sofas with linen fabrics , handmade oak armchairs with rattan details inspired by traditional furniture coming from the 50’s and sculptural curved black lava stone coffee tables “co exist “ with iconic ultra sleek lighting pieces. Beautiful lights coming from the New York based “Apparatus studio” and fashion designer Rick Owens’ magnificent brutal furniture with their primitive materials were selected by Studio Bonarchi for the reception and lounge area adding an artistic value, magically connected to the serenity and pureness of the project’s authentic greek style.
Kalesma’s interiors are characterised by a noble simplicity. Sensual materials, rich in spirit, create timeless spaces that allow the visitor to enjoy the true essentials: the greek light and the stunning Aegean Sea view.

V APARTMENT

V Apartment

Maintaining the basic morphological elements of an Art Deco apartment in the centre of Athens proved to be a challenge for Vangelis Bonios and his team during the in-deapth study of both the interiors and furniture selection for it’s new owner.

With a unique view of the national garden and the glamour of a residence located in the area of the old palaces of Athens reflected in every corner, the demand was obvious right from the start – Revival. A rebirth of the elements of this exquisite apartment and their transfer to the present adopting a truly “masculine” style following the brief of the client, a friend of Studio B o n a r c h i. A style that emerges through the use of furniture elements with a strict, sharp geometry.
B o i s s e r i e painted in black, doors with panels in extra glossy finish, rich plaster mouldings that envelop the white ceilings and dark oak floors compose a set reminiscent of a film noir from the 40s.
Upholstery with fine silk and rich velvet fabrics in shades of grey and custom made furniture from the owner’s favourite brands are added to the scene. Leather, bronze in dark shades and white marble were carefully chosen to highlight the constructions of the coffee tables and the desk that takes centre stage in the room with the oak lining.
Looking out of the window to this historical quarter of the city while surrounded by finery associated with an era long past, one cannot help but think that life does indeed move in circles. Black and white ones.

CHARISMA

Hotel

Charisma

Literally hanging over the dark blue waters of the Caldera, with a spectacular view to the Volcano, this latest addition to the Charisma hotel consists of 8 totally renovated suites surrounding an imposing traditional windmill that dominates the property. The owner’s request, being himself a native young hotelier, was that these new suites should in a way blend in with the existing Charisma hotel while at the same time bring a new, refreshing twist to its character.

To everyone who has ever experienced Oia, it should not come as a surprise that there is no interior design that could rival the breathtaking view of the Volcano and the Aegean Sea. With that in mind, studio Bonarchi’s approach was “transparent” enough to leave the visitor undistracted when facing this profound beauty. An all white interior, inspired by the traditional Cycladic colour palette has been enriched with the addition of dark elements. The rough black materials, in contrast with the white walls, act as a reminiscent of the dark Volcano mass, bathed under the bright Greek sun. The use of stone in earhty tones, natural rattan details and linen fabrics is a direct reference to the windmill lifestyle of a bygone era.

NIKI ATHENS HOTEL

Hotel

Niki Athens Hotel

In the case of Niki Athens Hotel, Studio Bonarchi was asked to proceed to the radical renovation of an existing 25-room hotel. Located on Nikis Street, in an area close to Plaka that reflects the many diverse and dynamic faces of Athens, the hotel should resemble this vibrant mosaic that is the Greek capital. To achieve that, Vangelis Bonios used a mix of elements, different styles and references. In perfect alignment with the vision of the owners, he kept the layout of the spaces unchanged, while all the decorative elements, the materials and the color palette were reinvented.

For the public areas, an ambience reminiscent of a “twisted classic” boutique hotel was chosen. Glossy dark wood panelling coexist with bronze details, industrial elements, iconic design pieces and pop culture details. All are characterized by a dark, dramatic mood that results from the choice of materials. A choice that was adopted primarily because of the floor in the restaurant area which was of nero marquina marble that was kept intact as a reference to the past.

In the private areas -all the rooms and suites- a brighter mood prevails. Details in bronze shades adorn the white walls which host the custom designed headboards and open closets made of oak wood. The translucent baths with the iron canvas and the retro glass were designed to bring natural light to every corner of each room. An absolutely defining element.

EX RESIDENCE

EX Residence

The commission of a private residence, being by nature a more personal project when compared to hotel or restaurants, is a welcome change for Studio Bonarchi. This was the case with this family house located in a posh suburb of Athens , where the owners’s love for art played a truly significant role.
A private collection of modern art pieces was the inspiration that gave birth to the idea of a house looking like an art gallery. White walls bathed in natural light were selected right from the beginning as the ideal backgrounds for some of the “grand scale” paintings. The works of artists like Santiago Parra , Katrin Frindrinks , Li Tianbing and Panos Haralambous stand out , being a part of the family’s everyday life. A bipolar palette of black and white colours was selected as an antidote to the multicolour presence of the art works.
Oak linings in dark colours and floors in natural and white ones , elegant transparent glass panels, nero marquina and white volakas marbles , together with clear, pure lines create a serene environment and an ambience with a glow of warmth that calms down the senses.

When it comes to private residences, lot’s of fun can be found in designing a bachelor’ s apartment. This being the case with this project , we had the opportunity to concentrate on a more masculine palette of materials and colours. Upon assignment, Vangelis Bonios was provided with a “carte blanche” to design all the furniture and select the lighting and decorative pieces.
An open space was organised , surrounding a kitchen stone island that separates the spacious dining area from the living room every day zone. Natural oak, brushed granite slade and velvet hues intertwine effortlessly bringing a cool yet distinctive feeling.
The holistic design approach meets its completion with the custom designed washbasins and the overscaled marble tiles that have been selected in total agreement with the apartment’s aesthetic identity.

BONARCHI APARTMENT

Commercial

Bonarchi Apartment

An apartment in a 1930s building of the Interwar period in central Athens was selected to host the Bonarchi agency. The unique sense of the Athenian sunlight coming through the overheight off-white windows of the facade inspired Vangelis Bonios to create a bright everyday space that functions both as a meeting place and a welcoming lounge area for the studio.

A French style boiserie in white was conceived to be the main background of the space, matching the original interior lacquered doors that were kept and meticulously preserved. So were the white ceiling mouldings and the oak fishbone floor, both quite fundamental elements of the apartment’s character, that strengthen it’s origins. A collection of refined pieces of furniture from different times in history, together with a selection of sleek contemporary design objects and art pieces, define an eclectic style, typical of the agency’s mood.

SEA SPICE

Commercial

Sea Spice

For Sea Spice, the challenge was to create the feeling of a sea food restaurant through the use of colors and of materials with appropriate textures. The key feature of the composition is the roof of the bar, a metal net construction with repeating light bulbs, an idea influenced by a picture of a fish market.

The imposing marble bar that runs along the lounge and ends up to the open kitchen dominates the space. It is visually connecting the outdoor dining area with the lively seafood preparation area. The open kitchen functions as a visual backdrop, while at the same time it can be isolated by the retro glass panels in bronze frames. On the carrara arrabescato bar counter, Bert Frank’s bronze lampshades bring to mind glittering memories of past decades.

The elements made of wicker, the deep blue hues along with the bright white touches on the walls, the bronze details and the carefully placed mirrors form a fresh palette of contrasts. The spiral, almost sculptural, staircase in the center of the space is reminiscent of the interior of a yacht, while the backs of the seats are either made of wicker or dressed in white and blue striped patterns, enhancing this distinctive nautical tone. Oversized kentias are used to give an overall summer feeling.

UBU

Commercial

UBU

The basic concept behind the design of the Ubu all-day restaurant was the creation of an open space, with a central open kitchen that will give guests a live, major experience. It is a clear gesture of symmetry, characterising both the space and the choices of composition made.
Everything seems to lead to the two symmetrically placed wood ovens, which thanks to their Carrara marble lining constitute the focal point of perspective, drawing the eyes with their frame and rendering the main idea even more clear. The central alignment of the two large luminaires in the entrance, the placement of the elongated monastery-type table at the centre of the space, the repeated lighting beams by the luminaires on the two side walls, serve as specific elements that clearly define the axes and lead the perspective to the live ranges of the open kitchen. The concept is further amplified by the visual game created by the placement of the Carrara marble lining at the central point of the hall. The placement of the lining blocks in an “open book” form ensures the participation of the material in the game of symmetry, which is obvious in the space.
The second aspect of the concept refers to the implementation of the “pure food” concept, that is real organic food, which is the motto behind the product offered. Such an idea can only be expressed through the use of materials whose authenticity can shape a genuine and honest environment. The entire colour range, balancing between earthly shadows and the contrast of black and white, is supplemented by a distinct, albeit discreet, manner, by the glances of gold and brass, cast by the luminaires and the decorative items.

WASHINGTON DC RESTAURANT

Commercial

Washington DC Restaurant

A closed invitation for a competition is always an honour for Studio Bonarchi. The central idea of the brief was to create a contemporary place to host the Greek culinary experience in Washington DC.Vangelis Bonios’s concept lied upon four basic elements : water – light – earth – whiteness .The idea was to translate these four essential elements that represent the greek spirit and the memories that somebody has when visiting Greece into a modern symbolic vocabulary that would give shape to a dynamic sleek modern space. Their immaculate interconnection is being attached by means of color and intersection. The way the surfaces intertwine with each other, the lines, the relation between the volumes and the alterations between the solid and the emptiness constitute the result of the final translation.
The main element of the composition is the liquid line (representing the presence of the Aegean sea). It is a sand – blasted dark granite volume ( lava stone) 12m long and its top consists of a marble digitally carved and polished to give the effect of wavy water. The open kitchen has been designed in an L – shape volume providing a cozy eating corner at the front part. The presence of the visible cooking oven adds a warmer light and sharpens the senses. The bar area on the opposite side provides the balance of the composition. The fire has been replaced by the coloured glimpse of the bottles together with the sunny gold veins of the marble counter. The mix of the shining glasses in contrast to the soft texture of the wooden oak panels in the back of the bar gives a dose of relax and euphoria at the same time makes senses weightless.
A large wooden table, placed on top of the “liquid line” representing the greek fiesta, is the heart of the synthesis. It forms the part that gives pulse and tempo to the whole endeavour. It is the place where laughter and passionate vivid discussions are heard.

BOLLICINE MYKONOS

Bollicine Mykonos Edited

There are cases of existing projects that require studio Bonarchi’s art direction services in order to obtain a new aesthetic identity, an updated look & feel. In Bollicine Mykonos, a concept store that combines a boutique on the ground floor and a restaurant on the terrace, studio Bonarchi provided a fresh, contemporary look for the interior, based on a strong game of contradictions between bold colours and materials.

Custom rough metal displays were created to display the collection of fashion items and art objects, upgrading the experience of this island boutique to the one of an art gallery. For the restaurant located on the terrace, the choice of grey stone table tops combined with linen outdoor fabrics created a neutral and at the same time relaxing palette in delicate balance with Hora’s hustle and bustle.

PERE

Commercial

Pere

The new decoration and renovation of “Pere Ubu” acclaimed bar – restaurant was based on strengthening its function as a casual restaurant, following the “burger bar” concept. The new style draws from the American dining culture and is attributed through an abstract approach.
In order to attribute the new concept, the introduction of new morphologies in the area has been adopted, focused on the formulation of a lower wood-lined zone, which wraps around the perimeter of the area, creating different seating areas and new hospitable corners for guests. This wooden “band”, made of vertical solid oak wood boards, ends by lining the dominant bar, located at the right edge of the hall. Lining the loft surface with the same material has turned in to a focal point which, despite its low height in comparison to the level of the ground floor, serves as a live zone not only for moving through but also for leisurely staying in the hall. This low zone was further strengthened by placing two elongated tables that create a central axis, taking advantage of the entire dynamics and width of the hall, serving a main meeting point.
These morphological elements, linked to the image and memories of a metropolis, create an urban interior setting. The “hungry” sign, custom-made using brass and iron, the metallic perforated, canvas-style, grids, and the large metallic decorative luminaires by Le Corbusier serve as a reference to the street life of an urban centre.

PARIS MAISON ET OBJET 2019 – 2020

Paris Maison ET Objet 2019-2020

Set design is always a challenge that Studio Bonarchi gladly takes on. This was the case when “Kakarountas”, a fine woodwork company based in Athens, requested us to design their exhibition stand for 2019-2020 Maison et Objet Fair in Paris.
Focusing on the idea of underlining the company’s range of materials and mastery of craftsmanship, Vangelis Bonios created a selection of eclectic objects along with pieces of furniture. He also undertook the curation of their display at the exhibition stand. Oak floor panels, lacquered wood paneling and brushed pine surfaces provided the ideal background, giving the atmosphere of a high-end showroom and celebrating mature craftsmanship and attention to detail. A glossy veneered walnut sculpture, a lacquered table lamp placed on the central meeting table and a daybed together with a series of tabourets shared the spotlight and showcased the Greek artisan’s values and distinguished know-how.

THE WRAP

Commercial

The Wrap

The Wrap is a 30 sqm tortilla bar located in the centre of Athens, just a few minutes walk from Syntagma square. It was designed to host a street food canteen, a bit out of the ordinary, a gourmet alternative to the mainstream street food options, offering fresh flavors that are daily produced with ingredients of the highest quality.

This idea was what determined the palette of materials, along with the final composition. Oversized marble tiles in dark grey and khaki tones were placed on the central serving bench and walls, creating a monolithic effect, while brass details appearing on several custom-made furniture and lighting items, bring a soft glow to the interior. The already existing small scale geometry of the space led to the adoption of one and only dominant linear element. A bar consisting of a vertical set of selves gives way to one central bench where the colours of the delicacies take central stage, thus seperating the kitchen’s functions. This bench runs along the interior, splitting it to two and finally finds its way to an oak communal table that welcomes customers outdoors. The linear alignment of lighting elements, both pendant and sconces, intensifies that gesture and leads the gaze of a passersby directly to the heart of the interior.

The Wrap is a street food canteen enclosed in an elegant precious little box, offering a unique gastronomic experience.

KINGLIN

Hotel

KINGLIN

Situated in the center of Athens, under the Acropolis and literally only a few steps away from the new Acropolis Museum, Kinglin is one of the exceptional arrivals of high end apartments to be found in the Greek capital. The property consists of 5 independent apartments organised in 3 different floors.
Taking into account its truly special location, references to the perception of beauty and form – famously encapsulated in the culture of ancient Greece, were considered by Studio Bonarchi as the main protagonists for this project from the very beginning.
The building, a typical example of Athenean neo classical arcitecture characterised by the simplicity of geometric forms, used to house a family of diplomats in the courtyard of the Royal family in the beginning of the 20th century. The doric detailing of the façade was carefully preserved and its presence mirrored in the totally re-constructed interiors.
Surfaces of marbles in a variety of hues and paterns were meticuslously selected so as to create a dialogue with the glorified volumes of marble gleaming from the Acropolis. Similarly, a colour palette consisting of cream, beige, terracotta and dark brown tones derived from Kinglin’s treasured neighbours – the statues and ceramics on display at the museum next door. A selection of custom furniture, Belgian linen sofas and Scandinavian pieces together with the iconic Italian Via bizzuno lights in brass gold consist a “scenery” of timeless elegance through a contemporary prism. The philosophy of the project’s study has been conceived in such a way by Vangelis Bonios and his team so as to make the Athenian light stand out as a true element of essence when passing through the white lacquered windows and the olive coloured traditional shutters.

THE DRESSING ROOM

THE DRESSING ROOM

For this “snapshot” project, Studio Bonarchi’s first late night sortie, we certainly felt like letting loose.
The dressing room of a showman performing round midnight called for a more flamboyant approach, tended however with our studio’s habitual stylishness and elegance.
Lush dark blue hues stimulate an after hours mood, contrasted with an extravagant total white carpet floor.
Wooden panelling, lacquered furniture, luminous bronze details and paintings from the performer’s personal collection polish off the surroundings.

KALESMA CHAPEL

Kalesma Chapel

There are some projects that for several reasons hold a special place in the hearts of the creators involved.
For us here at Studio Bonarchi, Kalesma has been such a unique case from the very beginning. A project that arrived early on the studio’s career and thus played a crucial part in molding our aesthetic identity and communicating it to a worldwide audience.
It is with great joy that we returned for the design of the Church.
Extra sentimental value was added to this venture since the church was named Agios Dimitrios, honoring the father of one of the owners who was christened after the saint’s name and who lived on this piece of land in his early years.
Aiming for uniformity with what has already been designed for the project, contrasts between the brightness of white and dark details were our focus once again.
The paintings inside, although unmistakably Orthodox, are unique in the sense that only black ink and gold paint were used.
A monastic altarpiece made of burned oak wood hosting images of Agios Dimitrios creates the impression that it has been standing there for ages.
An imposing candlelarium sculpted out of dark bronze hangs above custom made stools, welcoming the visitors in prayer.
