STOA ATHENS

Following a period were resort projects almost monopolized studio Bonarchi’s agenda, the invitation to design a 25 rooms five star hotel in the very heart of Athens was received as a most welcome change.
The location alone was more than enough to set the wheels of creativity turning.
An imposing stoa named after Pericles, a prominent figure of the Golden Age of Athens, streaching behind an exquisite Art Deco Facade of a building only a few minutes walk from the historical center of the city.
On our first visit to the site, we were mesmerized by the wealth of Art Deco undertones that have survived throughout the building’s numerous decades life span. An elaborate geometric railing here, an elegant ceiling molding there. Serving as evidence that , even in years long past, Athenians would cast a curious eye towards the European tendencies in Architecture and design.
We took extra care in preserving and enriching all those segments, all the while bringing them in an harmonious dialogue with celebrated elements of Ancient Greek architecture.
Glimpses of contemporary design and meticulously selected pieces of art were added to the mold, creating a new aesthetic vocabulary.
Shades of beige and cream, simulating the colours of the perpetual marbles of the ancient city, blend with hues of greens borrowed from the leaves of the olive trees around the Acropolis.
The stoa itself pays homage to the iconic Stoa of Attalos in the Ancient Agora of Athens. An elaborate collonade leads to the sunlit patio on the far end.
In the reception, a dark brown patina on the wall provides a dramatic back round for volumes of travertine stone sculpted in accordance with the Doric order, paired with a selection of eclectic pieces of furniture and contemporary lighting items.
On the opposite side of the stoa, inviting darker colours, curved marble frames, retro lighting pieces and velvet upholsteries bring out an art deco allure to the fireplace lounge. Luke Edward Hall’s design for Rubelli on the paravan adds a whimsical touch.
The bar is a Tinos green marble sculptural extravaganza with flashes of bronze.
In the restaurant, sconces installed upon mirror lined walls and dinning chairs with fringe details are a nod to old school glamour while a dialoque between the exquisite pendant items from Apparatus and the characteristic Athenian mosaic floor enfolds everything in sophistication.
