Kalesma Chapel

There are some projects that for several reasons hold a special place in the hearts of the creators involved.
For us here at Studio Bonarchi, Kalesma has been such a unique case from the very beginning. A project that arrived early on the studio’s career and thus played a crucial part in molding our aesthetic identity and communicating it to a worldwide audience.
It is with great joy that we returned for the design of the Church.
Extra sentimental value was added to this venture since the church was named Agios Dimitrios, honoring the father of one of the owners who was christened after the saint’s name and who lived on this piece of land in his early years.
Aiming for uniformity with what has already been designed for the project, contrasts between the brightness of white and dark details were our focus once again.
The paintings inside, although unmistakably Orthodox, are unique in the sense that only black ink and gold paint were used.
A monastic altarpiece made of burned oak wood hosting images of Agios Dimitrios creates the impression that it has been standing there for ages.
An imposing candlelarium sculpted out of dark bronze hangs above custom made stools, welcoming the visitors in prayer.
